Payne Residence
Sketch design for the Payne family. The brief for this design was to make the back garden more private and beautiful whilst maintaining its current uses, as the family spent a lot of time in the garden playing, eating dinner outside, entertaining and growing vegetables; they also wanted it to be low maintenance. To that end the existing informal walkways and dining area were formalized with concrete paving, the border between planting beds and lawn was delineated and the fire pit area was defined with low concrete seating and gravel surfacing; a new terrace was proposed at the bottom of the garden to provide another useable area. Climbers and two new large shrubs were proposed along the eastern boundary to provide screening along the top of an existing fence and to fill in gaps in the border; additional proposed new planting consisted of a mixture of evergreen shrubs and perennials, long lasting perennials and two grass species.
